Détecter les douleurs articulaires chez le chien et le chat

Joint problems in animals can be difficult to detect, but it is essential to recognize the warning signs to ensure your furry friend's well-being. Here are 4 signs that might indicate your animal is suffering from joint pain:

1. Lameness

If you notice your animal limping or having difficulty moving, it could be a sign of joint pain. Lameness can be more pronounced after a period of rest or physical activity. The animal limps, moves with difficulty, exhibits a stiff gait, or shifts weight between paws to relieve pain. It has trouble getting up after rest, hesitates to go up/down stairs, or refuses to jump onto high places like the sofa, bed, or furniture. The HOLI MOBILE kit is recommended, and for seniors, HOLI AGE should be added.

2. Decrease in Activity and Appetite

Reduced play, less desire to go out or run, a tendency to lie down or be withdrawn, sometimes loss of appetite or general disinterest in training.

3. Excessive Licking or Biting of Joints

The animal frequently licks or bites painful joint areas in an attempt to relieve itself. If you notice swelling in your animal's joints or if you observe an excessive reaction when you touch them, it is possible that they are suffering from joint pain. Swelling and tenderness can indicate inflammation.

4. Behavioral Changes

  • Irritability or Aggression: A dog or cat may become grumpy, or even bite or scratch when handled or when painful areas are touched.

  • Isolation or Withdrawal: The animal seeks to be alone, avoids contact, or no longer spontaneously approaches its owners. It may also change its resting places to avoid movement.

  • Loss of Interest in Play and Walks: The animal shows reluctance to play, run, or go out, losing motivation for its usual activities.

  • Refusal to be Handled: It refuses or shows signs of discomfort during petting, brushing, or when helped to go up or down.

  • House-training Issues and Incontinence: The cat, in particular, may avoid its litter box or have accidents because entering or exiting causes it pain.

  • Anxiety or Depression: The animal may show signs of sadness, dejection, or even depression due to chronic pain.
