Much research is underway regarding the functions that the The gut microbiota. The gut is often referred to as a "second brain" with a highly developed network of neurons. The similarities between the brain's convolutions and those of the gut are interesting. This suggests that the microbiota may have an impact on mood, emotions, and stress management. 

What is the microbiota?  

The gut microbiota comprises trillions of microorganisms. living in the intestines in symbiosis with the body, that is to say, in a beneficial association for everyone. This represents approximately the number of cells in our body! It consists mainly of bacteria, but also yeasts and viruses.  

This microbiota is also called gut flora. 

In total, the microbiota is home to approximately a thousand different species, for a total weight of nearly 2 kg.  

How is the microbiota formed? 

While in the womb, a fetus is considered sterile. It is during birth and the first few years of life that its microbiota is established. During a vaginal birth, the infant comes into contact with the vaginal and intestinal microorganisms—sometimes through the expelled feces—of its mother. Then, it ingests some microorganisms from the skin during breastfeeding (milk contains sugars that promote microbiota growth). It then develops through contact with relatives, as the diet is diversified, through the environment, and also according to hygiene and genetic makeup.  

In adulthood, the composition and function of the microbiota are relatively stable, although the system is constantly regulating itself and rebalancing itself according to external factors, such as diet or antibiotic treatments.  

What are the normal functions of the gut microbiota?  

The symbiosis between the body and the microbiota is close. First, the gut microbiota is thought to play a fundamental role in digestion. It breaks down complex foods that the body is unable to digest on its own: the plant fibers contained in fruits, vegetables, and grains (grains are very present in kibble).  

Another major role is to protect against pathogens, not only by "occupying space" but also, and especially, by interacting with the immune system. Indeed, babies are born with an immature immune system. By gradually establishing itself, the microbiota allows the immune system to learn to distinguish between "friendly" microorganisms and pathogens.   Warning: the microbiota can be affected by taking medication!
