That's it! The delivery has taken place, and mom cat or dog can finally rest. Well, almost, because managing a swarm of newborns and then young teenagers is quite demanding. 

Growth is a crucial period for their future well-being and requires maximum energy to fully realize its potential. Very weak, puppies and kittens keep their eyes closed during the first few days for the simple reason that their eyes have not yet finished developing at birth. During the first two weeks, they will keep them closed. During this stage, they will need to be protected from strong light, the dangers of the outside world, and the paws of their littermates. 

Our little furballs need access to the first milk secreted by the mother: colostrum, rich in antibodies. For two days after birth, the puppy or kitten must also be kept warm. 

The nutritional needs of the puppy 

A puppy needs a balanced diet to ensure optimal growth. It is essential to choose a diet rich in nutrients and energy (good quality proteins, appropriate protein/fat ratio) and to supplement with the products in our HOLI KIT - BABY to avoid deficiencies unfortunately induced by a diet of low-quality kibble and to reduce the risks of growth disorders in large dog breeds. 

It is imperative to measure a puppy's food rations according to the recommendations on your dog food package. Remember: Never feed a puppy unlimited amounts; overfeeding can be risky! 

Joints: Excess calcium is dangerous 

During the first 5 months of his life, your puppy is not able to protect himself from excess calcium in his diet. If there is too much calcium in the diet, it risks being deposited in his growth cartilages which will cause irreversible osteoarticular abnormalities . It is also advisable to limit any intense exercise on slopes (uphill or downhill): the weight is then shifted onto the front or hind legs and puts too much strain on his very fragile joints. 

As you can see on the x-ray, the bones of 8- to 10-week-old puppies don't touch. This explains their unsteady gait; their joints are made entirely of muscles, tendons, and ligaments covered in skin. Therefore, they are still very fragile. Be aware that if you overuse their limbs, you jeopardize the healthy growth of their skeleton. Indeed, with each intense blow, there is a risk of impacting the bones, which, in the long run, could damage them. Be careful with excessively long hikes or sudden movements, which risk damaging their bones.

Puppies' bones and joints are still developing until they are at least 18 to 24 months old. Too much exercise or walking can seriously damage their bone and joint structures, irreversibly. 

For our feline friends, up to six months, your kitten is growing very rapidly. 

From six months of age, their growth will slow considerably. At 12 months of age, your snooping cat will still seem like a kitten and will likely still get up to some mischief. However, by 9 to 12 months, many cats are almost fully grown. By one year of age, your kitten will generally be considered an adult (even if you think they're not acting like one yet). 

With their small stomach capacity, your hungry kitten not only needs multiple daily servings of food (it might take up to 18 meals a day and night to be satisfied if they were free-roaming in the wild), but they also need food that is rich in protein and fat, and balanced in minerals to meet their energy needs. 

Plus, as you know, kittens have boundless energy. With all that intense play and fighting, and growing up, it's especially important for your feline companion to have quality, nutritionally complete, and balanced food. It will lay a healthy foundation for the rest of their life.
