What is an allergy?

Is your pet scratching, biting, or licking excessively? If so, they're likely suffering from a very common problem: allergies.

Pet allergies manifest as itching and a need to lick, bite, or scratch their skin. Signs of a skin allergy can include frequent paw licking or even ear infections.

Excessive licking and biting can also lead to the growth of bacteria on the skin. When your pet is battling allergies, the constant itching can be a real pain.

Be aware that it is possible for your pet to develop an allergy at any time to food they have been eating for a long time.

What are the most likely causes?

Obviously, the ideal is to remove the allergen, but you still need to know what it is. Be aware that some companies offer allergy testing. Here is a list of the most common allergens:

• Food allergens (chicken in particular);
• Flea bites; note that fleas do not stay on the animal, they go on the ground to lay eggs and then climb back onto the animal to feed. Hence the importance of treating the environment, if this is the case;
• Environmental allergens: pollen, dust, spores or mold; soaps, etc.
• Human dander;
• Over-vaccination.

It's very difficult to pinpoint the source of allergies. Sometimes, symptoms simply appear as a result of stress. Causes can include a breakup, a move, the arrival of a new pet—in short, a sudden change in their routine.

How do I know if my pet has fleas?

Place your pet in the tub, lift the front legs, and rub the back firmly against the hair. You will see residue fall into the tub.  Remove your pet and place a drop of water on each small area. If you see a red ring appear, this will confirm that it is flea droppings.

What treatments?

In reality, there is no real cure for common allergies. Commonly prescribed medications end up blocking the critical immune and biological response system and often have unwanted long-term side effects.
