Roundworms, nematodes, cestodes, giardia, coccidia, tapeworms, do you know them? 

Behind these friendly little names lie the most well-known internal parasites in our pets. These parasites are caught by ingesting eggs found in the soil or in the droppings of other animals. Ingesting fleas, rodents, and slugs also contributes to parasitism. Finally, worms can be transmitted by the mother during pregnancy. 

These charming organisms colonize the intestines; some are visible, others not. Worm infestations can go unnoticed. It's important to note that internal parasites cause 4 to 9% of animal deaths. 

On the other hand, some roundworms can cause "larva migrans " in humans who become infected by ingesting embryonic eggs through soiled plants, soil or sand (children in sandboxes), or simply by petting their pet or by ingesting undercooked food containing larvae. These eggs release larvae which, by migrating into the human body, are responsible for the " larva migrans " syndrome. Larval migration can affect the liver, spleen, abdominal cavity, lung, eye or brain and cause serious illnesses with significant after-effects. 

For horses, whether in pasture or in rest paddocks, equines are constantly contaminated with parasites. As long as a balance exists between the horse and its parasites, the horse is healthy. Conversely, if this balance is disrupted in favor of the parasites, clinical signs may appear (diarrhea, colic, etc.). 

To eradicate them or not? 

All of these parasites can cause health problems for our pets, and some pose risks to human health. Our bodies, and theirs, contain thousands of parasites that live in harmony with us and are even essential to us. The important thing is to maintain a balance between the animal, host, and parasite. 

The excessive strength of these parasites, which leads to disease, is linked to a deficit in the host's immunity. As long as the host's immune defenses are at their peak, the parasites simply coexist. When the animal suffers a drop in immunity (stress, trauma, etc.), the immune defenses diminish and the parasites "take on new strength." 

Eradicating these parasites with dewormers (except in cases of severe infestation, which your veterinarian will define) will further weaken the defenses, which will allow other parasites to arrive en masse and develop at will within the intestines.
